Projects
We are currently focused on:
Resources Related to Free Media
Collecting (or generating) current news articles that focus on:
- Human rights violations of free speech by governments in Africa or the world.
- Grassroots political communication in Africa and elsewhere (particularly in authoritarian regimes)
Dissident Amplification
- Organizing US-based dissident communities from African countries where speech is oppressed.
- Creating and broadcast interviews with opposition and reformist leaders and scholars.
- Generating media (film, audio, journals) with dissidents and ex-pats to facilitate change in home countries.
Academic and Policy Review
We collect and review academic and policy articles that discuss
- The relevance of free media to long-term economic independence.
- The historical benefits that the U.S. “Radio Free” programs have had.
- The history of speech suppression by authoritarian regimes.
Legislative Outreach
- We examine the records and writings of U.S. policy makers for rhetoric that supports a Radio Free Africa program.
- RFA is in the process of setting up meetings with key policy makers likely to support the concept.
Technology Outreach
We make and maintain contact with radio operators, mobile (i.e. SMS) communications corporations, and others with a presence in Africa who might be able to participate in the development of a free media infrastructure
Hot Spots
We identify specific locations where free speech is under attack or denied and develop plans to provide free speech in a safe manner to the populations.
