The African Press, Civic Cynicism, And Democracy
In this book, Dr. Minabere Ibelema explained that civic cynicism among Africans is one of the enablers that has permitted democracy to stall in Africa. According to Dr. Ibelema, this state has permeated throughout African society and is just as damaging to Africa as the rule of Big Men. Dr. Ibelema urges the African press to address this issue in order to encourage constructive civic participation by Africans to counter corruption and hold their leaders accountable for poor governance. The African Press, Civic Cynism, And Democracy is the winner of the Sigma Delta Chi Award, given by The Society of Professional Journalists.
Dr. Ibelema is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies at the University Alabama, Birmingham.

WOMEN JOURNALISTS IN NAMIBIA’S LIBERATION STRUGGLES: 1985-1990
Nghidininwa, Maria M.
Investigates the experiences of women journalists during the last phase of Namibia’s liberation struggle against South African rule. Black or white, women journalists in Namibia made significant contributions to the liberation cause – including the founding of a high-profiled newspaper – whilst others worked for media sympathetic to the apartheid government. Based on interviews and deploying feminist media theory, Maria Mboono Nghidinwa pays close attention to the gendered power relationships in the newsrooms of newspapers and radio stations at the time. She looks at the intense political intimidations which targeted women and, in particular, the constraints experienced by black women journalists.
