Radio Free Mexico eyed to stem migration

Bombing the Free Press

During the early hours of October 2, 2000, unidentified persons smeared human exrement on the entrance of the officies of the Accra bi-weekly, Crusading Guide. The incident is the third time under the Rawlings regime that human waste has been used as weapon of intimidation against the private press. Other media houses to have suffered the same fate — known as “shit bombing” in the local press — are the Ghanaian Chronicle and the Free Press (Index on Censorship, Nov/Dec 2000; p.175).

Nelson Mandela on Article 19

Independent Media is Mandated by the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights

“Article 9

1. Every individual shall have the right to receive information. 

2. Every individual shall have the right to express and disseminate his opinions within the law.”

This Article was incorporated by the African [Banjul] Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted June 27, 1981,entered into force Oct. 21, 1986.

Only 8 of the 54 African countries have a free media.

According to Freedom House’s 2003 survey, only 8 out of 54 African countries have freedom of the press and of expression: Benin, Botswana, Cape Verde Islands, Ghana, Mali, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe and South Africa.
